Oral Presentation

NURS 421 – Clinical Management of Children of the Family

Purpose of Assignment:

To provide the student an opportunity to integrate knowledge from the sciences, developmental theory and physical assessment data to the care of a pediatric patient and family in the acute care setting.  The student will utilize critical thinking and independent judgments in presenting a holistic plan of care in a formal oral presentation.

Student Approach to Assignment:

To fulfill my oral presentation requirement I spoke in a grand rounds to fellow students and professors about a child I cared for in the pediatric oncology unit. I opted to use Prezi as the presentation format, and utilized chart review, interviewing, and assessment skills to compile the needed information. This complicated case helped me to conduct research of evidence-based interventions, perform in depth assessments, and develop public speaking skills.

Rationale for Inclusion of this Assignment in the Student Portfolio:

The oral presentation assignment showcases my ability to present a patient’s details and case with my peers, use technology to enhance this experience, and conduct research. Within the body of paper I satisfy the following Old Dominion School of Nursing End-of-Program-Outcomes in accordance with their accrediting body:

Critical Thinking

Revises actions and goals based on evidence rather than conjecture

Example: While this patient was young, she had a strong grasp of what her diagnosis was, and what was happening to her. This caused a large amount of anxiety, which impacted nursing care. When performing interventions like IV changes, assessments, or medication administration, the care provided was clustered to encourage an experience that is not elongated. When asked what her goals were, the patient stated that she wanted to, “eat cake on her birthday,” which was about 10 days away. After explaining her diagnosis of typhlitis, she understood she would not be able eat anything until her bowel was fully healed, and revised her goal to “celebrate when she was healthy again.”

Nursing Practice

Establishes and/or utilizes outcome measures to evaluate the effectiveness of care

Example: In order to evaluate the effectiveness of care for this patient, the precepting nurse and I continually used numerical rating scales to communicate with the 10 year old patient. We used a standard 0-10 pain rating scale, but we also used a 0-10 scale for her to rate her energy level – 0 meaning ‘I do not think I can do anything but sleep’ and 10 meaning ‘I need to get up and visit with friends/family.’ Because the patient was receiving chemotherapy, frequent blood transfusions, and TPN, the use of this energy scale allowed us to keep an eye on how she was feeling after various interventions and allow us to suggest changes or adapt nursing care to be clustered if needed to promote rest.

Teaching

Uses information technologies and other appropriate methods to communicate health promotion, risk reduction, and disease prevention across the life span

Example: When explaining typhlitis to the patient and her family, an iPad was used to show them the area of the body affected and what to expect during treatment. I showed the patient the area inside her body that was affected, and explained in easy to understand terms how she can contribute to her care in order to heal. Because of her age she was very interested in what was happening with her body, and the visual aid contributed greatly to her understanding of health promotion as she navigates her illness.

Research

Differentiates between descriptive nursing literature and published reports of nursing research

Example: Within my presentation I discuss both descriptive literature as well as nursing research. The descriptive literature follows families with children whom have been diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and encourages nurses to make changes in teaching and role-modeling for parents without any numerical studies, only qualitative data. The nursing research outlined care of a child with neutropenic enterocolitis and provided quantitative information based on previous suggestion by descriptive literature.
